GETTING to stadiums on match days need not be a hassle. The nine host cities have plans to ensure that fans get there in comfort and on time.

GETTING to stadiums on match days need not be a hassle. The nine host cities have plans to ensure that fans get there in comfort and on time.

l In Johannesburg, Ellis Park and Soccer City stadiums will be serviced by Metrorail, Shosholoza Meyl and Gautrain to ensure fans get to the venues on time.

The Bus Rapid Transit System will also service both stadiums from Soweto, the Johannesburg city centre and the northern suburbs.

No drop-offs will be allowed in or near the park-and-ride and park-and-walk facilities.

lPretoria will provide rail services through Metrorail, which will service Loftus Stadium. A park-and-ride system will operate from the city.

A special long distance transport service will operate to and from Pretoria from Nelspruit, Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Rustenburg.

lCape Town's transport plans include commuter rail, the Integrated Rapid Transit System, park-and-ride services and an airport shuttle from Cape Town Airport to the stadium. The city is also developing a transport hub to Fifa Fan Fest, and public viewing areas will be serviced by public transport.

lDurban's commuter rail system, operated by Metrorail, will transport fans to the stadium precinct. The city is also implementing a network of park-and-walk sites.

l There are plans in Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth for a BRT bus system to be operational for the World Cup.

lMangaung/Bloemfontein has provided pedestrian facilities from Bloemfontein Station. Long distance bus travel will be at the CBD close to the stadium. Schools near the stadium will accommodate park-and-walk facilities.

l In Nelspruit, buses will transport fans from park-and-ride sites to the stadium. Shuttles will be supplied from the main transport hub in the city centre. Existing public transport will transport supporters from areas like White River and Barberton.

lPolokwane has designed a park-and-ride system to transport fans from various sites in the city to the stadium and the fan mile, which is within walking distance of the stadium. Public transport will ferry fans from residential areas to the city centre.

lRustenburg will use contracted bus and taxi services. OR Tambo International Airport will be the main air hub for the city, and intercity transfers will transport fans between Johannesburg and Rustenburg.
