Sedibeng to get glimpse of Cup gold

VANDERBIJLPARK in Sedibeng won't be hosting a Fifa World Cup match, but locals will have a feel of the event with the arrival of the original trophy today.

VANDERBIJLPARK in Sedibeng won't be hosting a Fifa World Cup match, but locals will have a feel of the event with the arrival of the original trophy today.

The replica trophy will be presented to the winning team at Soccer City on July 11. The other trophy that has been touring the country is the original.

The replica will be displayed at the Vaal University of Technology in Sedibeng and later at Saul Tsotetsi Hall in Zone 14, Sebokeng, today.

The tour of Sedibeng comes a week before the kickoff of the tournament.

Sedibeng has produced many great soccer players and administrators, including Molefi Oliphant, Kenneth Kubheka and Ernest Marumo. Others include Bafana Bafana captain Aaron "Mbazo" Mokoena, Sipho Nkumane, George Thabe, Simon Lehoko, Jabu Mnguni, Steve Lekoelea, Basil Mohalane and Daniel "Sailor" Tshabalala.

Later in the afternoon, the trophy - which has been to 86 countries on its 225-day tour - will go to Mogale City.

Tomorrow, the trophy will be in Soweto and Johannesburg. The tour will reach its climax with a visit to Nelson Mandela's house in Houghton on Saturday.

After going to Madiba's house, the trophy will be officially handed over to Fifa.
