FIVE men accused of plotting to kill KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize abandoned their bail applications at the 11th hour in the Pinetown Regional Court yesterday.

"We were caught off guard. The state was ready to proceed with the bail application," said prosecutor Mncedile Dunywa.

Themba Xaba, Jackson Chili, Mlungisi Xulu, Sthembiso Mthembu and Sizwe Mkhize were supposed to apply for bail yesterday.

But their Legal Aid Board lawyer RN Thuketana told the court his clients had decided to abandon bail. He did not give reasons.

The case was postponed to June 25.

The five face charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition and conspiracy to commit murder. They were arrested near Mkhize's house. - Sapa
