A handful of animal lovers protested outside the Somerset West magistrate's court yesterday where five youths appeared for allegedly killing a retired cart horse.

They allegedly fashioned a bridle of barbed wire and rode the horse, Bukshi, to death, stabbing him in the sides and stomach to keep him moving.

Bukshi was found dead 50m from his home.

The case was postponed to June 10 as the defence attorney was off sick.

Two of the accused are out on bail and the other three remained in custody. - Sapa
