We must be there for each other

MANY months ago, when the national soccer team was not doing well, you thought I was crazy when I declared my support for Bafana Bafana.

MANY months ago, when the national soccer team was not doing well, you thought I was crazy when I declared my support for Bafana Bafana.

I told you then that it is in troubled times that we need compassionate and loyal friends because everybody loves a winner.

The fortunes of our team seem to be improving, in fact they are on an 11-game unbeaten streak and all of you are now running amok with selfless and unrestricted enthusiasm.

Your expectations are pregnant with all sorts of dreams and goals and fascinating hallucinations, some realistic - most certainly not.

This is the reality of life, yours and mine. When things are rosy everyone wants to be seen and heard around us, but when the tide turns we wipe our own tears and are forced to learn to hold our own hands.

Having touched the traumatised and infected lives of millions of people living with HIV, I know the feeling of dejection, rejection and loneliness.

I know what the value of compassion and unchallengeable commitment to one's cause means, therefore, I will not stand in your way as you trample along declaring your newly found love for Bafana Bafana.

In the meantime, I will temporarily retire to recharge my batteries so that when the madding crowd is gone I can return to lift them up and to remind them that they will always be champions, in defeat and in glory, in my stained eyes.

My love for our sporting teams cannot be measured by success alone, it must be guaranteed especially when the going gets tough.

The most important lesson is that in our intoxicated state of imminent glory we must always remember those who stood by us when others were avoiding us like a plague.

In life there are ups and downs. There are unpredictable times of ill-health, stress, loss and defeat and incurable sickness.

It is at these crucial times that we must be there for each other.

We must show commitment, patriotism and understanding. Our collective spirit of hope must infect those who are discriminated against and trampled upon.

I wish to take this opportunity to wish our football troops well as they represent our proud country in the biggest tournament ever seen in this world as we know it.

I will be there in victory and in defeat. My blood is green and gold forever.
