Thumbs up for little Suzuki Alto

The thing I like about the Alto is it's never a chore or an effort to drive.

Around town it gives you the fuel economy that should give the oil barons in the Middle East sleepless nights, and on the open road ... well it's no slouch either.

Running late for an appointment in Pretoria the other day, I opted for the normally quieter N14 that skirts around Midrand before delivering you in the CBD of Tshwane.

There's no way I would encourage speeding, especially in a small vehicle, but let's just say the Alto was as happy as a mouse in a cheese factory as it sat in the fast lane and ate up the kilometres with relish.

Yes, the boot is pretty small and there isn't a great deal of room in the back, but that's not what the Alto is about.

It's an ideal commuter or "mom's taxi" and its economy rate is second to none.

In fact, at last glance I was getting about six litres to 100km. To get better you probably have to walk or grab a bicycle!

And I'm pleased to say it's just not me who enjoys the Alto as a mode of transport.

Other members of the Road Rave team give it the thumbs up and to date the only problem that we've picked up is a double puncture last week.

Mind you, that can happen anywhere these days, considering the state of our roads.
