A Science Career Guidance and Information Communication Technology Resource Centre was launched in eMalahleni, Witbank, yesterday.

The initiative involves the Mpumalanga department of education and National Department of Mineral and Energy, MTN, Anglo American, Vodacom and Eskom.

The facility boasts an interactive science centre, a career guidance centre and a high tech ICT resource centre.

It will be used by teachers and learners in the Nkangala region.

Mpumalanga education MEC Reginah Mhaule said: "The centre has the capability of linking up with other schools in the region using broadband satellite technology.

"This enables learners to actively participate in demonstrations and lessons without having to physically leave their classrooms."

Mhaule said she hoped that the facility would stimulate interest and promote effective delivery of subjects such as mathematics, mathematics literacy, physical science (chemistry and physics), life science, English language, technology and ICT.

She said the centre would serve school communities and out of school youths in the greater eMalahleni area of the Nkangala region.

She said stakeholders had allocated R19million for the project.
