PUPILS and community members of Nkandla were in high spirits yesterday after six local schools were provided with computers to boost computer literacy among rural pupils.
School children and local leaders gathered in large numbers at the Nxamalala Council Offices for the handover of the 20 computers.
The decision to provide the computers follows the community's request for the same during the government-funded Independent Development Trust indaba.
Ndukuyakhe Primary School principal Prisca Kunene said the school would make good use of the computers and that pupils would greatly benefit from them.
She said it was a new experience at the school and she appealed to residents to protect the computers.
IDT spokesperson Vusi Leeuw said: "The four high schools and two primaries will divide the 20 computers among themselves and they will help pupils to operate and understand different computer programmes.
Leeuw said the initiative was also backed by first lady Sizakele maKhumalo-Zuma, who emphasised the need for modern technology in schools in the area. - Khulekani Mazibuko
