A 12-YEAR-OLD boy who survived a car accident that killed his best friend is recovering at home in Soweto after spending six days in the intensive care unit.
Amogelang Morodi and his friend Tshepiso Moganedi, both Grade 7 pupils at Matubeng Primary School in Moletsane, Soweto, were on May 14 hit by a car driven by Thato Mishombo.
It is alleged that Mishombo, 18, who does not have a driver's licence, was speeding at the time of the accident.
Amogelang's father Henry Morodi said his son was recovering well.
"The doctors are happy with the improvement but we are scared that he is bottling everything inside," he said.
He said Mishombo's relatives had visited him, apparently to ask for forgiveness for the injury to his son.
Amogelang said the pain was gone and he felt much better now. He said his foot would take time to heal but that he would soon return to playing cricket.
"All the time I was in hospital I was thinking about my friend and whether I will be better. When I was told about her death I was sad but I think going to her memorial service helped because I feel better now," Amogelang said.
He said he missed Tshepiso's smile and laughter.
"She was my best friend. I miss her, especially her jokes," he said.
About the accident, Amogelang said after the car hit him he felt dizzy.
"When I woke up there were people standing around me. I asked for water and was taken to hospital," he said.
He said despite missing out on school, he was confident he would pass this year.
His father said police had visited his home and left a letter asking Amogelang to report to the police station.
Mishombo has been charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent and driving without a licence.
He is out on bail of R1000 and will appear in court again this month.
