Mgobhozi's removal from his duties comes after the disappearance of 98 weapons from the station.
Mgobhozi was informed by police management to leave the station immediately last week after three of his officers, two clerks and a security guard assigned to look after suspects in hospitals, were arrested for the alleged crime.
Police officials, Themba Blose, Jabulile Mtshali, Noah Blose, Bonginkosi Dlamini and Bonginkosi Mdima appeared in the Verulam magistrate's court over the stolen guns while a sixth accused, Thulisani Mfeka, appeared before the same court on Wednesday.
They will appear again tomorrow.
Mgobhozi has been deployed to the province's inspectorate unit at police headquarters in Durban after top management expressed a vote of no confidence in him.
Brigadier Percy Mthembu from the Point police station has been seconded to take over at the Inanda police station for the time being.
Revelation of the missing weapons from the police station's exhibit room seems to have left police management with egg on their faces.
It is alleged that national police chief General Bheki Cele is annoyed because "unpleasant incidents happened in the station right under his (Mgobhozi)'s nose".
The DA's community safety spokesperson, Sizwe Mchunu, said his party was satisfied with the decision to remove Mgobhozi from his post.
"Through neglecting to advise senior police officials about the missing weapons, Mgobhozi had displayed a serious lapse in judgment. He will have to account for this," Mchunu said.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Phindile Radebe confirmed that Mthembu has been deployed away from Inanda.
She said it was incorrect for people to suggest that Mgobhozi was suspended.
"There is no criminal case against Mgobhozi. He has been posted to the head office to do other police duties. This was done because there is an investigation going on at his station."
