Grannies bound for US - but they need support

IT'S OFFICIAL! Vakhegula Vakhegula, the soccer-playing grannies from Limpopo, will soon be making their dream trip to the US.

IT'S OFFICIAL! Vakhegula Vakhegula, the soccer-playing grannies from Limpopo, will soon be making their dream trip to the US.

The NkowaNkowa-based side was invited to take part in the Veterans Cup in Massachusetts from July 13 to 18.

Vakhegula's founder and coordinator, Beka Ntsanwisi, said Mopani district municipality helped them to get passports for the grannies last week.

"It is all systems go for our grannies to fly to the US after we completed the applications for the passports and visas last week.

"Travel and accommodation arrangements have already been made for 15 players and 11 officials by the tournament organisers. The grannies have also intensified their training sessions," Ntsanwisi said yesterday.

"After the recent donation of R118000, of which R100000 was pledged by Afrisun East Rand Community Trust, including R10000 from Robert Marawa (the popular sports presenter) we managed to add a further six players to the travelling team. We also received help from the organisers to add more players. We are confident that we will able to raise enough money to take all the grannies to the US," said Ntswanwisi, who is also a presenter at Munghana Lonene FM.

"After the grannies' appearance on SABC2's Morning Live yesterday we received calls from people who are willing to assist us financially. For now we need R300000 to cover the remaining 15 grannies. We are still waiting to hear from the office of the premier but we are hopeful that they will be equally helpful," she said.

Mopani spokesperson Mashadi Mathosa said they would organise a send-off party for the grannies.

"Besides assisting them to secure the passports we will also get them football kit. We wish them all the best," Mathosa said yesterday.
