MPUMALANGA police are investigating a case of theft of a human skull and some bones from a grave by unknown people.

The police said the bizarre find of the exhumed skull and bones was made by municipal cleaners at the weekend.

"The terrified workers phoned the police," Barberton police spokesperson Constable Jabulile Ndubane said. "When the police arrived on the scene they found the grave wide open. The inscription on the gravestone indicated the deceased was buried in 1983.

"We are waiting for the pathology test, which will help us to get more information about the person who was exhumed."

Ndubane said family who wanted to claim ownership of the damaged grave should first produce enough evidence.

She said the perpetrators committed the offence at night, knowing there was no security guard at that time.

They entered the graveyard and did whatever they wanted to do uninterrupted," Ndubane said.

She said the suspects were still on the run. Police are investigating a case of violation of a grave.
