THE term of one's schooling, from Grade 1 to Grade 12, is often jealously guarded. Understandably.

THE term of one's schooling, from Grade 1 to Grade 12, is often jealously guarded. Understandably.

Finishing within the 12 years rightly gives the pupils bragging rights to take into further studies and the rest of their lives.

Some Mpumalanga bright sparks - not cleverly, of course - had decided to put the future of a handful of pupils in abeyance, withholding their results after accusing them of cheating during the matric exams last year.

Now, almost midway into the year, an official in a suit has the gumption to say "We Wuz Wrong" - they did not cheat.

The best these kids can do is start university only next year while the bureaucracy that messed up a whole year of their schooling will get off with not so much as a slap on the wrist.

One child, who had planned to study at Wits University, even contemplated suicide.

Shouldn't those who make such crucial decisions, at the very least, run the rule over their determinations?
