THE KwaZulu-Natal department of education has upheld an appeal by nine Zibambeleni High School teachers who were dismissed last year.

THE KwaZulu-Natal department of education has upheld an appeal by nine Zibambeleni High School teachers who were dismissed last year.

The teachers from Newcastle were dismissed in November. They had last performed their duties in February last year following major disagreements with the principal.

Delivering his decision to reinstate the nine teachers, MEC Senzo Mchunu warned teachers to refrain from putting their interests before those of pupils.

"It's such a pity that the department has condoned the slaughter of the poor, black child for such a long time," Mchunu said.

He warned the school would be shut down if there is no improvement in this year's matric pass rate.

"The school's track record for the last five years indicates just how much you have deviated from the core business of the existence of this institution as a centre for quality learning and teaching."
