SOWETAN readers are expected to "Pitch In" during the much-awaited Pikitup Clean-up Day on Saturday.

SOWETAN readers are expected to "Pitch In" during the much-awaited Pikitup Clean-up Day on Saturday.

The campaign, conducted by the City of Johannesburg's waste management company, is expected to outdo last year's voluntary public participation figures that included 30000 people who filled more than 63000 refuse bags and cleared more than 255 tons of waste.

Sowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation, as well as radio and television personality Penny Lebyane, are among about 30 site sponsors.

Other sponsors are radio and television stations and community newspapers, who are taking part in the annual nation-building clean-up campaign. It will cover most of Johannesburg's 1625km² area between 9am and 12pm.

The project is aimed at encouraging Soweto residents to keep their environment clean.

For the record, Sowetan's clean-up site is near Soccer City, the 2010 Fifa World Cup tournament venue outside Crown Mines on Nasrec Road, off the Pat Mbatha Bus and Taxi way and Soweto Highway.

"The intention is to clean dirty spots that might reflect badly on our city's image," Pikitup managing director Zami Nkosi said.

The campaign was launched in May 2009 and with the first Clean-Up Day on June 6 last year.

Nkosi said more than 30000 people took part in the project. They filled more than 63000 refuse bags and removed 255 tons of waste.

"Pitch In" is the apt motto of the campaign, which coincides with World Environment Day.

Readers who want to take part in the Clean-up Day are requested to register on www.pikitup.co.za. For more details call 011-375-5555.
