THE Independent Electoral Commission in KwaZulu-Natal has praised political players for showing maturity during the bi-elections on Wednesday.
There were six bi-elections in the province and the commission said no incidents were reported.
Provincial electoral officer Mawethu Mosery said the bi-elections were peaceful.
"We must congratulate the people of the province for showing political maturity."
The ANC and the DA were on cloud nine for their respective victories during the bi-elections.
The ANC scooped three wards including ward 7 in Ndwedwe previously under the IFP.
The party also won ward 1 in Umzumbe and ward 4 in uMsunduze.
ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said: "As the ANC, we are quite impressed by the support the people of the province of KwaZulu-Natal are giving to the ANC.
"We again pledge our commitment to serve their interests as champions of service delivery and in the fight against poverty and under development," Zikalala said.
"Yesterday's results are clear indicators of what will happen in next years' local government elections which, as the ANC, we will win overwhelmingly."
The DA retained its control in ward 16 in Hibiscus Coast municipality.
DA leader John Steenhuisen said his party increased its share of the result from 61,3percent in the 2009 general elections to 78,7percent in this by-election.
He said this by-election underscores the growing trend of evidence in the April 2009 election of voters rallying behind the DA as the only realistic alternative to the ANC.
"This is the third major by-election victory for the DA in KwaZulu-Natal this month - showing that the choice is clearly between the DA and ANC and to show that the DA is growing and winning in more places than before.
"This latest victory helped build our momentum towards the 2011 local government elections where we will be taking on the ANC in every ward across this province," he said.
The Inkatha Freedom Party also retained its control of ward 15 in Nquthu and ward 11 in Msinga.
