Among the dignitaries who gathered at the venue were Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale, MEC for sports, arts and culture Joyce Mashamba, roads and transport MEC Pinkie Kekana, safety and security's Dikeledi Magadzi, Polokwane municipality's executive mayor Thabo Makunyane, his municipality's 2010 director Ndavhe Ramakuela, Vhembe district municipality executive mayor Falaza Mdaka and Coca-Cola South Africa's general manager for 2010 Onwell Msomi.
The trophy arrived in the province for the first time for public viewing since it landed in the country early this month. A long queue of people lining up to enter the stadium formed from 7.30am to catch a glimpse of the trophy. Many of the people entered the venue courtesy of Coca-Cola Phashasha Moment, which gave an opportunity to at least 700 people to see the trophy at close range.
Mathale said this was an opportunity to celebrate the first World Cup tournament on African soil and boost the mood of the people of Limpopo days before kickoff.
"We are humbled by the gesture shown by Coca-Cola in affording us an opportunity to see the solid-gold trophy with our own eyes," Mathale said. The premier said he hoped the trophy would remain in the country after the tournament.
Msomi said: "We are very happy that our people have been offered an opportunity to be closer to the symbolic trophy."
The trophy was to leave Polokwane in the afternoon to return to Mpumalanga for public viewing.
Festivities will continue at the stadium tomorrow, where Fifa president Sepp Blatter, general secretary Jerome Valcke and LOC CEO Danny Jordan are expected to unveil a plaque at the stadium. The festivities will end on Monday night with an international friendly between Bafana and Guatemala.
