IT IS that time of the year when Johannesburg residents get involved in the Pikitup Clean Up Day. It takes place on Saturday June 5.

Sowetan and the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation are partners of the campaign that encourages residents to keep their environment clean.

The campaign was launched in May 2009 and the first Clean-Up Day took place on June 6, 2009. More than 30000 residents participated. They collected more than 63000 refuse bags and got rid of more than 255 tons of waste.

Pitch In is the motto and the day is organised by the City of Johannesburg's waste management company Pikitup. It coincides with World Environmental Day.

"We'll clean the dirty spots that might reflect badly on our city's image. Let's show World Cup visitors a cleaner world- class African city," says Pikitup's managing director Zami Nkosi.

Sowetan's clean-up site is near Soccer City. On Monday we will publish the exact location.
