FOUNDATION IN PLEDGE TO TRAIN MORE YOUTH

THE Tiso Foundation celebrated five years yesterday by recommitting itself to the education of the youth.

THE Tiso Foundation celebrated five years yesterday by recommitting itself to the education of the youth.

It has spent R70 million on skills training for over 20000 youth in nine projects.

The foundation responded to a request by government for the private sector and NGOs to focus on more training initiatives on scarce skills as published by the Department of Education.

Tiso launched its flagship Artisan Development Programme last year with the objective of training 500, previously unemployed and untrained youth, in scarce technical skills such as boiler-making and specialist welding.

Professor Chabani Manganyi, chairperson of the foundation said, the "foundation has set its goals on achieving this significant milestone. Our programmes, our partners and staff are all geared to ensuring that we continue to reach thousands more of our youth in search of opportunity and hope."

The foundation was set up at the formation of the Tiso Group in 2001. Tiso Group executive chairperson Nkululeko Sowazi said "the foundation was from the beginning an integral part of the very essence of what we were creating and not an afterthought."
