MAMA Angel on Tuesday visited Moses Marens Technical Secondary School in Eikenhof.

Mama Angel's visit follows a request by school principal Ella Matlejoane to help in outfitting a kitchen for the school's feeding scheme. Mama Angel gave the school pots, cutlery and crockery and an urn as a starter.

"We have a lot of pupils who live in child- headed homes. Some children literally faint from hunger at school because they have not eaten for several days.

"We have a feeding scheme to try and make a difference in their lives. We give them all a meal at least once a day," Matlejoane said.

"We do this in the hope that we will achieve good results at the end of the year," she said.

The school has 850 pupils from Grade 8 to Grade 12. The matric pass rate was 62percent last year. The children are from the surrounding informal settlements of Thembelihle, Freedom Park, Vlakfontein, Majazana and Legae. The few adults in the area are unemployed.

Matlejoane said the school, which was originally built by Pastor Moses Marens to educate farmworkers' children, does not have a library, laboratories or a staff room.

She said staff helped to raise funds to buy uniforms and shoes for the pupils.
