SABC shortlist for news head

A NEWSPAPER political editor and a former head of SABC and e.tv news are also contenders for the public broadcaster's top job.

A NEWSPAPER political editor and a former head of SABC and e.tv news are also contenders for the public broadcaster's top job.

Sowetan can exclusively reveal that Business Day political editor Karima Brown and Jimmy (Jimi) Matthews are being considered for the SABC head of news and current affairs post. The acting head Phil Molefe and another journalist from the broadcaster's regional office were also on the shortlist.

Last week, SABC board chairperson Ben Ngubane and the broadcaster's group chief executive Solly Mokoetle announced Molefe's appointment without consulting other board members. That decision has since been reversed.

Molefe had been acting in the position since Snuki Zikalala left a year ago.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said: "The SABC board resolved that the purported appointment of group executive for news and current affairs head Phil Molefe is null and void." - Sibongile Mashaba
