The European Union (EU), KSW German Development Bank and German Technical Cooperation will partner with Sports and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) for the Youth DevelopIment through Football programme.
The chief operations officer of SRSA, Somaya Kahn, said the partnership with the EU and the development came at an opportune time and would relieve the organisation of budget constraints.
"Sports and recreation almost always has to make do with the smallest budget. "The size of our budget makes it impossible to carry out our mandate, hence we chose to involve ourselves in this partnership," she said.
Over the past few years more than 100 football pitches will be built in some of South Africa's rural areas.
Seven are already under construction at Winterveldt in Gauteng, KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal, Gamanamela in Polokwane, Limpopo, Lekgalong village outside Rustenburg in North West, Ikwezi and Qunu in Eastern Cape and Mangaung in Bloemfontein.
Adina Golombeck of KSW German Development Bank said the 13,5million euros (R131,89million) would see the country's various municipalities applying to have a football pitch built in their area.
"The application process will begin in 2011 wherein municipalities will be required to apply and motivate as to why their municipality needs to have a football pitch built by the development bank."
