A 27-YEAR-OLD man, accused of raping his 12-year-old stepdaughter, was arrested on Monday night.

Mpumalanga police said the man, who lives in the Msogwaba Trust near Nelspruit, was caught raping the child in his house.

"The girl was rescued by residents who heard her screaming in the house," KaNyamazane police spokesperson Inspector Andries Skwambane said.

"When he saw neighbours approaching the house he staggered out and confronted community members gathered outside.

"He told them to leave him alone since he was doing nothing wrong.

"After entering the room where the alleged rape took place the neighbours found the girl lying on the floor."

Skwambane said the police were called in by irate community members at 9.30pm.

"When the police arrived on the scene they found the young girl crying bitterly," Skwambane said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the KaNyamazane magistrate's court soon.
