Cop held over guns

A SENIOR officer and a clerk from Inanda police station in Durban were arrested in connection with the disappearance of 98 firearms from the station.

The consignment of firearms including AK47s was kept at the station before being transported to the ballistic laboratory.

They had been seized from the community during various crime-fighting operations.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Phindile Radebe said the warrant officer and the clerk were arrested on Monday over the unaccounted-for firearms.

She said police conducted investigations after receiving information that the two were allegedly involved in the disappearance of the firearms.

Radebe said during a recent audit of the exhibit room at the station it was discovered that firearms were missing.

"When it was brought to the attention of the provincial commissioner she immediately ordered that a task team from the Hawks investigate the matter," she said.

The suspects are expected to appear today in the Verulam magistrate's court on charges of illegal possession of firearms and theft of firearms.

Radebe said at this stage police investigations were still continuing and more arrests were expected.
