ZIMBABWE struck four against Seychelles in the African Nations Championship final-round qualifiers at the weekend.

While a small crowd in Victoria on the Indian Ocean island saw the net bulge six times as Seychelles fell 4-2, the other four first-leg matches produced only six goals with no country managing more than one.

Uganda edged Kenya 1-0 in an East African derby, South Africa were lucky to overcome Zambia by the same score, Angola snatched a late 1-1 draw with Malawi and Tunisia came from behind to share two goals with Morocco.

Return matches are scheduled for the weekend with the winners qualifying for the 16-nation tournament in Sudan next January. Zimbabwe qualified for the first championship in Ivory Coast last year and appear certain to make it again thanks to goals from Benjamin Marere, Nyasha Mushekwi, Qadr Amin and Bheki Ncube.

Geal Jesinghaus and captain Don Annacoura were on target from the penalty spot for Seychelles, who shocked Namibia in the previous round of a region-based qualifying competition.

Midfielder Sula Matovu became the Ugandan hero in Kampala by following up to score after Kenyan keeper Lawrence Webo failed to stop a Simon Masava cross.

Substitute Carlos Santana struck two minutes into stoppage time to salvage a draw for Angola in Luanda after Harry Nyirenda put Malawi ahead at 33 minutes. Morocco made the perfect start in Sousse, Tunisia, with Yassine Salhi scoring in the first minute, but Ammar Jemal equalised with a second-half penalty. - Sapa-AFP
