The year represents infinite possibilities and proud achievements for the African continent. As the day draws nearer Africans should take a moment to reflect on where we are as a continent.
In 1960 18 African nations attained independence from colonial rule. On May 25 1963, in a gesture of unity and commitment to the ideal of African liberation, 32 independent African nations formed the Organisation of African Unity - now the African Union.
Three of these nations, Cameroon, Nigeria and Ivory Coast, will be proudly flying the African flag as qualifying teams at the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup, the first ever to be played on the African continent.
Africa Day celebrations, hosted by the Department of Arts and Culture in partnership with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Gauteng government , the City of Ekurhuleni and the SABC, will be a demonstration of cooperation in action. The event will take place at Ekurhuleni's Dries Niemandt Park on May 29.
President Jacob Zuma will address the nation. This will be followed by cultural activity and a music concert featuring artists from the African nations that qualified for the tournament.
A development soccer match between a South African under-18 team and their counterparts from the continent will round off the activities in Germiston.
"The 47th anniversary of Africa Day is an important landmark for us as Africans. As a continent, we have demonstrated that working together we can do more to make our people proud.
"The theme of this year's Africa Day, Promoting and Maintaining Peace in Africa through Sports, takes on a real significance in the light of our role as hosts of the Fifa Soccer World Cup and certainly reflects the spirit of unity that guided the formation of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963.
We must use this day to consolidate efforts for unity and prosperity on the continent as we prepare to host the world," Minister of Arts and Culture Lukama Xingwana said;
"We must them experience Africa's humanity."
