LAGOS - Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote is interested in buying a 16percent stake in English Premiership club Arsenal, local media reported yesterday.

Dangote, listed by Forbes magazine as one of the world's richest men, told ThisDay newspaper he was considering buying the stake of Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith.

That stake is worth £96million (R1,08billion), making her Arsenal's fourth-largest shareholder.

Dangote said he had been nursing the idea of investing in Arsenal for a while. He said he has supported the team since 1980, "when I forged a relationship with Mr David Dein, former vice-chairperson of the board of Arsenal". - Sapa-AFP
