THOROUGH BREEDS

TURFFONTEIN, the popular horse racing course, south of Johannesburg, will host a completely different breed of "horses" on Thursday night.

TURFFONTEIN, the popular horse racing course, south of Johannesburg, will host a completely different breed of "horses" on Thursday night.

The venue will be home to professional fighters, courtesy of boxing promoter Andre Kerr who will continue where BRD Promotions left off when they staged a box-and-dine event in 2008. Diners got more than they bargained for with the inclusion of a female bout between Sandra Almedia and Khensani Makama.

For the record, Almedia is the same boxer who made headlines after making her professional debut in Australia in 2007 without the approval of Boxing South Africa. She blew Makama away in one round.

Now Kerr, a new kid on the boxing promotions' block, who trades under the banner of Seconds Out Promotions, intends to rekindle old good memories of that evening.

He announced that his tournament will also be a box-and-dine event and tables of 10 will sell for R3000. Individuals will also be accommodated at R100.

Most bouts are evenly-matched and involve mainly rising stars who want to make ground in the fistic sport.

They include Grant Fourie and Stanford Mabasa who face each other in the junior welterweight division over eight rounds. Both are making debuts in this division from lightweight.

Fourie, trained by his father Louis and Johan Krieger, is a capable pugilist who has underachieved on his capability after his defeat to Sydney Maluleka two months ago.

That was his second defeat against 11 wins (7 KOs) and a draw, while Mabasa has an unimpressive CV that reads two wins (2 KOs), five losses and a draw.

Other capable fighters who have the gumption to wow fans include Chonunorwa Gonorendy. He will exchange leather with 2008 Baby Champs super middleweight champion Rudy Bruwer.

Ugandan David Kitioke and Simon Mokoena meet in a rematch of the super middleweight bout. Kitioke, trained by the accomplished Harold Volbrecht, boasts a points-win over Mokoena, who is trained by the celebrated Manny Fernandez, in their previous fight.

Other fights on the night are:

Light heavyweight - Sheldon Thatchell vs Wynand Mulder; Super middleweight - Chaz Wasserman vs Ndumiso Mbatha; Middleweight - Sylvester Zaki vs Basil Maseko; Lightweight - Keith Nkosi vs Edward Khwazi

Junior lightweight - Prince Ndlovu vs Nkosnitahi Ntshangase; and Bantamweight - Morné Bothma vs Fanfikile Cabe.

All these bouts are scheduled for four rounds.
