Showbol is a new six-aside indoor soccer which is growing in leaps and bounds after it was first introduced in Brazil eight years ago.

Showbol has become popular in other countries in Southern America and Europe such as Argentina, Mexico and England.

It was launched at Montecasino in Fourways on Thursday night where soccer icons like Neil Tovey, Marc Batchelor and Mark Williams were also present.

There will be an amateur league where some of the prominent soccer icons like John Moshoeu, Doctor Khumalo and Shaun Bartlett will help by conducting clinics.

There will also be the professional league, which will be played from September to April, with the finals scheduled for the Coca-Cola Dome.

The winners of the Showbol PRO Series, which will follow the PRO20 format of the cricket competition, will take home R3million.

Eight franchises will take part in the series.

McCarthy congratulated Showball South Africa chief executive Brendon Hannan and his committee for bringing the six-a-side indoor soccer to this country.

"This is a wonderful project, especially considering that it goes hand in glove with the developmental aspect to train children," he said.

Coaching clinics to teach youngsters the basics of the game are under way in areas like Soweto, Katlehong and Randburg.
