Great venue

THE prophets of doom, who predicted that South Africa will fail to stage a successful World Cup must be choking on the humble pie they have been served with.

Soccer City Stadium, which hosts the event's opening match between South Africa and Mexico on 11 June and the final on 11 July, is truly a magnificent stadium.

It played host to 76000 football fans who had come to watch the Nedbank Cup final between Bidvest Wits.

President Jacob Zuma cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of the 94000-seater stadium.

The crowd responded with a rousing welcome. The atmosphere inside the stadium was fantastic. The pilots added to the excitement with their beautiful flying displays.

The stands were a sea of green with fans clad in the Bafana Bafana shirts. Supporters performed the Mexican wave until goals came late in the second half.
