Sowetans sing with R Kelly

GOSPEL group Soweto Spiritual Singers cannot wait to perform with R&B superstar R Kelly on June 11 at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

GOSPEL group Soweto Spiritual Singers cannot wait to perform with R&B superstar R Kelly on June 11 at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

The group will be performing a collaborative song called Sign of a Victory with Kelly. The song has been chosen as Fifa World Cup anthem, one of many performances during the opening ceremony of the month-long soccer tournament.

Vicky Vilakazi, the group's creative director, is over the moon.

"I am so excited, I am not only happy at the opportunity to sing with him but also at the opportunity to contribute to the production.

"We have shown that a group from Soweto can do it. I am happy that I have contributed to the production with Nkululeko Vilakazi and Gama Mathonsi. Finally, I did something I know I will get accreditation for."

Vilakazi, who co-owns the Soweto Spiritual Singers with Nkululeko, Thabo Ledimo and Gift Vilakazi-Ledimo, did the choir arrangement of the song.

The song reflects the spirit of giving and will highlight the charitable aspect of the World Cup. All proceeds from the song will benefit African charities.

Kelly said: "I feel blessed that Sign of a Victory was selected to be part of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

"The World Cup is an event that brings the world together and inspires us to be and do the best we can.

"It's this uplifting feeling that I tried to capture in Sign of a Victory."

The Jive Records artist performed a sold-out six-concert tour of South Africa and Nigeria last year.
