Mkhize helps poor put food on the table

GOOD Samaritan Lindelani Mkhize of Joyous Celebration is assisting poverty-stricken youths to use their vocal skills to put food on the table.

GOOD Samaritan Lindelani Mkhize of Joyous Celebration is assisting poverty-stricken youths to use their vocal skills to put food on the table.

Mkhize has taken in 20 youths from Folweni area outside Durban under his wing.

After training them, Mkhize helped them start a gospel group called African Salvation.

The group will launch its debut album this weekend and "will surely give existing groups such as the Soweto Gospel Choir a run for their money", Mkhize said.

Group member Zam Hlengwa, an unemployed father of two, said: "The money that the group makes from performances helps me feed my extended family."

He said the group's popularity has already grown in the province and they now have a grass-cutting project to assist them in between gigs.

"Mkhize has groomed us. We were only expecting him to assist us with the music, but he went beyond that. We have all grown a lot musically as well," Hlengwa said.

Mkhize added: "Their music is unique. It has an element of African gospel that is unique. I'm sure many are going to appreciate and love their music. You don't have to be a church person to love their music."
