McLaren mows down West Indies order

IT TOOK an impressive bowling display by man-of-the-match Ryan McLaren to ensure a first-up victory for the Proteas over the West Indies in Antigua on Wednesday evening.

Only joining the team on Tuesday, McLaren achieved the second-best figures ever in the T20 format of the game when he too five wickets for just 19 runs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

The selectors must have been scratching their heads as to why they left him out of the recently completed T20 World Cup in the first place.

The match also proved a welcome return to form for Jacques Kallis and skipper Graeme Smith.

"I think we did well to reach (136) on a surface on which it was difficult to set a target," Smith said.

The second T20 match takes place today at 8pm. It will be shown live on SS 2. - additional reporting by Sapa
