Khumalo gives Showbol the nod

FIFA 2010 World Cup ambassador Doctor Khumalo has endorsed Showbol, saying the indoor soccer spectacle will help fast-track the development of the game.

FIFA 2010 World Cup ambassador Doctor Khumalo has endorsed Showbol, saying the indoor soccer spectacle will help fast-track the development of the game.

"It will complement the other development programmes that we have in soccer with the focus on teaching the basics of the game," Khumalo said.

"I must say it is good that a life- skills programme, especially for the youngsters, is also part of this wonderful project that must be embraced by all of us."

Showbol, which was launched at Montecasino in Johannesburg yesterday, will include household names such as John "Shoes" Moshoeu, Mark Williams and Shaun Bartlett.

Showbol is the international brand of six-a-side indoor football that has become legendary for its popularity in Brazil, Mexico, England and Argentina.

Brendon Hannan, chief executive of Showbol South Africa, said Showbol was a successful soccer programme that was being rolled out all over the world, catering for amateur and professional players.

"It is played on artificial surfaces. Showbol is built on four pillars, the first one being development. The second one is the professional series, which will have eight franchises to be launched in September and will be played until April.

"The third pillar is legends - the South African Soccer Legends with more than 1000 members who are the integral part of our legacy programme.

"The fourth one is action and will get South Africans involved," Hannan said. He said Showbol was endorsed by Safa and the PSL.

l About 160 children from Soweto, Katlehong and Eldorado Park, belonging to the Roots2shoots Foundation, will take part in a tournament at Montecasino from today until Sunday. Tomorrow, Moshoeu, Mark Fish and Williams will be part of a side that will play a game against an All Star team.
