Jubatha soon joined the professional ranks, but was stopped in the second round in the finals of the 2008 Baby Champs in Pretoria by Matima Molefe.
But Jubatha, who is trained by Lennox Mpulampula at Enothole Gym in Mdantsane, put this setback behind him and went on to score many victories before winning the South African title from Thando Vukuza in December last year.
Jubatha, 28, has 10 wins (7 KOs) against one defeat. Japhta, his challenger, is also under pressure.
This good-looking fighter from Westbury, which has produced several colourful dogs of war including Cameron "Kangaroo" Adams, carries the hopes of its coloured people. They are dying to have a champion. Their last hero was Earl Morais, who held both the SA and WBA Pan African cruiserweight belts. Morais's reign ended in August 2003.
Japhta rose through the ranks by first winning the 2007 Baby Champs title and the Gauteng provincial belt in May last year.
Japhta tasted defeat early in 2005 at the capable hands of Ludumo Galada, but has not lost a fight since. He has 12 wins (4 KOs), a loss and a draw.
"I want to surprise people in my area, especially those who are not aware that I'm fighting for the title, by waking up on Saturday as the national champion," said Japhta, who will be ushered to war by trainers Benny Pailman, Cliff Martins and Peter Faver.
This fight has the potential to be a cracker and will be televised live on Blow by Blow at 10pm. It will top the joint promotion bill of Mamali Promotions and the Nelson Mandela Boxing Promoters. There will be six more undercard fights, including the vacant WBF featherweight championship between Molefe and Siyabulela Ziqula. The action starts at 8pm.
