Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the department was planning the 2011 intake at its Lilitha nursing college.
In a break from past years, it would take applications only from the 6000 community healthcare workers, caregivers and directly observed tuberculosis treatment supporters already in its employ.
In previous years applications were open to anyone in Eastern Cape.
Kupelo said that depending on their qualifications, applicants would be able to put their names forward for either a four-year nursing diploma, or learnership programmes for nursing assistants or enrolled nursing assistants.
Roughly 800 applicants are accepted for the diploma every year, and some 600 for the other two categories.
Kupelo emphasised that this year's approach did not mean community workers would automatically get places at the nursing colleges.
They would still have to go through screening and short-listing processes.
Age limits would also be applied, Kupelo added. - Sapa
