IT WILL cost about R1,6 million to repair the social development offices that were petrol bombed in Mandeni on KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast.

Last month unknown people petrol-bombed the department's mobile office. The incident occurred soon after MEC Meshack Radebe withdrew a security company that was guarding the offices.

Yesterday Radebe led social workers, officials from the South African social security agency and those from Home Affairs on an initiative to re-register poor people, including orphans, whose applications were destroyed by the fire.

Addressing thousands of people at Mandeni Stadium, Radebe lashed out at those behind the fire.

He said he was disappointed that there were some heartless people who preferred to destroy government offices, leaving thousands of poor people, including orphans, to starve.

He said his department would put aside more than R5 million to build a one-stop development centre in the area. - Mhlaba Memela
