THE British government says its citizens should not visit South African townships during the World Cup without consulting a tour guide first.

The British foreign and commonwealth office posted a safety notice on its website yesterday.

"If you are visiting a township, consult a reliable tour guide first," it says. The notice also says: "Travel in groups. Walking alone anywhere . is not advised." Another tip offered is: "Always look behind you before opening your hotel room."

Other bizarre advice includes: "Stay safe. Expect the unexpected as the local driving style varies from that of the UK. Be aware of the risk posed by wild animals." It also warns of carjacking and ATM fraud. But Trevor Bloem of the tourism department said South Africans should not be offended. "Walking in groups is a common-sense approach that authorities advise globally," he said.
