THE ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday said that its elective conference this weekend will be peaceful.
The much anticipated conference starts today at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Howard College Campus.
Provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo said the conference comes at a time when the youth of KwaZulu-Natal are facing a number of challenges, including access to job opportunities, abuse of substances and crime.
"The preparations of the congress have gone very well and the conference will go ahead as planned," said Mtolo yesterday.
"As the ANC Youth League we want to assure the youth of KwaZulu-Natal and the people in general that our congress will be peaceful and there would be no disruptions."
Key issues to be discussed at the congress include the nationalisation of mines, a draft youth development policy and job opportunities for youths.
"We believe that these issues are critical in advancing youth development issues in our province," he said.
Meanwhile, Sowetan has learnt that the regions are divided between three candidates - Gugu Simelane-Zulu, Fanele Sibisi and Mthandeni Dlungwane to lead the youth league.
Simelane-Zulu, who enjoys a huge support from the majority of the branches, is tipped to win.
She is currently the provincial treasurer. If she is elected chairperson, she will be the first woman to lead the league in the province.
The position of chairperson is open for contestation because incumbent Mxolisi Kaunda is turning 36 in September.
Kaunda is also chairperson of the transport portfolio committee in the provincial legislature.
