TRADITIONAL Ndebele music queen Nothembi Mkhwebane pictured, will be strumming her guitar at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria.
Mkhwebane, pictured, will perform as part of the Jazz and African Music Nights on May 28. She will be sharing the stage with promising singer Luz Legoka.
Mkhwebane was born in Carolina, Mpumalanga, in 1953. Growing up in a musical family, her love and passion for music started at an early age. Her grandmother taught her to play the reed flute when she was small Later, her uncle taught her to play a tin guitar. Today, Mkhwebane is a master of the instrument.
She started a musical group called Izelamani zakoNomazlyana and the group played at cultural gatherings and weddings.
Mkhwebane has performed in New York, London, Washington, Austria, Germany, Portugal, Australia and France.
Some of her albums include Intaba Azihlangani, Ihlophekazi, KwaZam-Zam, Vukani Bomma and Zimami Balibalele. She also collaborated with Phuzekhemisi on Sihlangenisizizwe.
Mkhwebane has won the Femina-NNTV Woman of the 90s in 1995, Tourism Ambassador for South Africa in 1998 and Mpumalanga, Sports, Recreational Arts and Culture and Heritage Award Professional Music in 1999.
