THE dilapidated Danganya Lower Primary School on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast has had a facelift.

This thanks to after former Springbok swimmer Julian Taylor raising R500000 by swimming in shark-infested waters. He also contributed R100000 from his own pocket.

Last year Taylor's heart broke when he witnessed 300 children squashed in a dilapidated building with no roof, toilet facilities, desks or a playground.

Realising that he was not getting much joy from local and provincial government, he risked life and limb and swam in shark-invested waters from Amazimtoti to Umkomaas, more than 20km, to raise funds for the school.

After the heroic swim he later cycled 1200km through the UK to highlight the plight of the school to international donors.

Builders Trade Depot and other suppliers also invested R400000 in building materials to renovate and upgrade the school.

Principal Nonhlanhla Manciya said the support received from Taylor and the private sector had been amazing.
