'Ndebele pics vs potholes'

THE DA has called on Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele to explain the decision to place adverts worth R1,2million in several newspapers.

THE DA has called on Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele to explain the decision to place adverts worth R1,2million in several newspapers.

The 24-page supplement titled "SA on the Move" appeared in four newspapers last week.

DA MP Lindiwe Mazibuko, pictured, yesterday said it was unwise for the department to pour the money in advertising instead of attending to road maintenance backlogs of R75billion.

"What this administration continues to fail to recognise is the cost involved in every item of fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

"That R1,2million could have been used to repair 2400 potholes instead," Mazibuko said.

She pointed to 27 full colour photographs of Ndebele in the advertisement as nothing but a "self-congratulatory" exercise.

Mazibuko said the figure does not include the costs associated with compiling the information in the advertorial.

"The DA will be issuing further parliamentary questions on this matter," she said.

The director general in the department, George Mahlalela, said the government placed the advertisement to keep citizens informed as required by the Constitution.

"Government is required to maintain continued interaction with its citizens in order to enable all South Africans to become active and conscious participants in social transformation," said Mahlalela.
