LIFE will never be the same for 220 poor pupils from 11 schools in the Mopani district in Limpopo.
The pupils received sets of school uniforms from district executive mayor Joshua Matlou in Tzaneen on Monday.
The pupils were identified during a "back-to-school campaign" that Matlou and his council conducted early this year.
The schools were selected from all five local municipalities in the district.
Each pupil received a uniform set as prescribed by their schools, including shirts, trousers, skirts, jerseys and shoes.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Matlou said the municipality was planning to increase its annual bursary scheme from R500000 to R1million in the next financial year.
It is hoped that the increase t will help more needy students to further their studies in the field of engineering and agriculture at tertiary institutions of their choice.
He said this had been done in order to fulfil Premier Cassel Mathale's promise in his state of the province address in February that 2010 was a year of intensive learning.
According to Matlou an increase in the number of no-fee schools to 71percent last year surpassed the national average of 60percent.
Speaking on behalf of the pupils after receiving the uniforms, Nkhensani Chabangu said it was not easy for them to go to school without proper school uniforms.
The mayor earlier donated some 100 bags of cement and five loads of building sand to the Bankuna High School in NkowaNkowa for the construction of a security fence around the school.
