haskins is eager to add cup medal

STAR Bidvest Wits midfielder Mark Haskins is gunning for his fourth cup winner's medal and could claim it when his side engage AmaZulu in the final of the Nedbank Cup at Soccer City on Saturday.

STAR Bidvest Wits midfielder Mark Haskins is gunning for his fourth cup winner's medal and could claim it when his side engage AmaZulu in the final of the Nedbank Cup at Soccer City on Saturday.

The 29-year-old won two titles with Jomo Cosmos - when they beat Moroka Swallows 3-2 in the Super 8 final in 2003 and when they pipped Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in the Coca-Cola Cup final in 2005.

Haskins claimed his third gold medal when he helped Swallows lift the 2009 Nedbank Cup by beating University of Pretoria 1-0 at Rand Stadium.

Now he is adamant Wits can bring the Nedbank Cup to Milpark on Saturday.

The final will mark the official opening of the refurbished stadium that will host the opening and final matches of the 2010 World Cup on June 11 and July 11.

Haskins told Sowetan after their training session at Milpark Stadium yesterday of Wits's determination to beat Usuthu and lift the cup.

It would be good for Wits to win something for their few fans, considering they last won a trophy back in 1995 when they clinched the Coca-Cola Cup.

Haskins said: "We are close to winning a trophy after such a long time and it will be a memorable moment for me to win my fourth gold medal in my career.

"It will also be a great feeling for my teammates and I to play at Soccer City, which will host the opening match and the final of a big tournament like the World Cup. We have worked very hard to be where we are and will not lose our composure in the final.

"We are aware that we are meeting a team as strong as AmaZulu but we are not going to allow them to win this cup."

Haskins came off the bench to score a brace as Wits beat Free State Stars 3-1 in the semifinals of the prestigious event in Potchefstroom on Saturday. He could also prove a handful for Usuthu.

Kickoff is at 3pm.
