THIRTY-TWO amateur soccer clubs in Soweto will take part in the Soweto Cup between this weekend and June.

Soweto Football Association CEO Phil "Chippa" Mogodi said the matches will start on Saturday at eight sportsgrounds in the township.

The association thought it would be a good idea to follow the format of the World Cup from the round of 32.

"We are using Power Park, Orlando, Mzimhlophe, Pimville, Senaoane, Dlamini, Naledi Extension and Zola," Mogodi said.

"The clubs that qualify for the last 32 round will adopt the (names of) the countries in the World Cup.

"The tournament started three weeks ago with 96 clubs. It is all about development - there is no way we will produce quality players without it.

"Teko Modise, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Reneilwe Letsholonyane are some of the products of our development leagues and we are over the moon to see them in the squad preparing for the World Cup," Mogodi said. The Soweto Cup final is set for June 5.

"We are in discussions with Clinix and Nike for sponsorship."
