Buthelezi honoured

IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi has been honoured with the prestigious Order of Saint Michael and All Angels by the Anglican Church of Southern Africa.

This month the church celebrates its 140th anniversary. It honoured Buthelezi for his distinguished service in the Zululand diocese.

Buthelezi was previously awarded the Order of Simon of Cyrene, the highest order given by the Bishops of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa to laity for distinguished service.

Membership of this order is limited to 60. In addition, Buthelezi was awarded the Order of Saint Mark by the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa (Egypt).

This order was awarded to him by the head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Africa.

Bishop of Zululand Dino Gabriel said Buthelezi had always treasured his Christian upbringing. This strengthened him to persevere in times of victimisation and change.

"Against all odds he remained faithful and devoted to the Anglican Church of Southern Africa and the diocese of Zululand.

"He was involved in the life of the church over many years and continues to play a very significant role."

IFP secretary-general, Musa Zondi said: "This shows that we are led by a visionary, who is committed to truth, irrespective of whether that truth is seen by many or not."
