WITH the South African Music Awards still a year away, Sifiso Mjoli, aka DJ Fisherman, is already gunning for the Best Newcomer prize.
Fisherman, from KwaNdengezi near Durban, joined production house Afrotainment about five years ago as a producer and sound engineer. He is one of the few DJs counted among the country's best house music producers.
Fisherman says he never had any formal training in music.
"I grew up listening to a lot of different genres and I then started producing for young musicians in various townships. That's how I got recognised."
Afrotainment boss Mthokozisi Khathi, aka DJ Tira, said that they had worked hard to launch Fisherman and are confident that his album, The Fishtank: Volume1, will scoop an award at the Samas.
