Comrades walk a lift for Cup

THE Comrades Marathon Association has organised a walk event in Pietermaritzburg on May 25 to galvanise support for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

THE Comrades Marathon Association has organised a walk event in Pietermaritzburg on May 25 to galvanise support for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

This is a joint partnership between the association and the City of Pietermaritzburg, who will also set up public viewing areas during the World Cup for local residents.

CMA marketing coordinator Thami Vilakazi said: "We expect thousands of people to join us on the day - it will be a great platform to show our support for Bafana Bafana. As South Africans, we must all rally behind the national team because they really need our unwavering support in a big tournament like the World Cup.

"We also need to support them beyond this tournament. I am confident they will make us proud. It is good that the team has regained its appetite for goals.

"We must also contribute to the success of the World Cup by buying tickets so that all the stadiums will be packed to capacity from June 11 to July 11."

This year's Comrades Marathon will take place on May 30 with more than 20000 runners from as far as Russia, Germany and the US competing. Some of the big names who will compete include Josiah Thugwane, Brian Zondi, Farwa Mentoor, Pauline Phaho and Bethuel Netshifhefhe.

Celebrities like former Bafana midfielder Helman Mkhalele, singer Kabelo Mabalane, radio and TV presenters Koena "Koenaldo" Moabelo and Redi Direko will also be there.

Mkhalele said: "I can't wait to make my Comrades Marathon debut.

"I will be running with my Bafana Bafana jersey in support of Aaron Mokoena and the rest of the team, also raising funds for charity."

Mkhalele, who has also played for Jomo Cosmos and Orlando Pirates, will compete in the ultra-marathon to raise funds for Pink Drive Cancer charity organisation.
