Hats off to Mdladlana

JIMMY Manyi is a charismatic man who used his platform as president of the Black Management Forum to articulate the feelings of the masses.

He was a popular commentator who was not afraid to slay the establishment's sacred cows.

But now he is engaged in a dodgy deal that allows him to wear two hats.

Thankfully, his new boss, Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana, is fed up with this and has given him an ultimatum. He must choose between being director-general of the labour department or go back full-time to being president of the BMF.

At the time of his appointment Manyi told Mdladlana that his deputy would take over his functions at BMF. He did an about-turn later in October and was re-elected as president. He is seemingly reluctant to relinquish his presidency.

Mdladlana correctly wondered why Manyi had not mentored a successor if he wanted to join the government. Others say he believes no one can do the job better - a fallacy that has hobbled greater men than the president of the BMF.

His reluctance is also understandable after the serious gaffe his deputy, Thembakazi Mnyaka, made when Futhi Mthoba trounced Sandile Zungu, a President Jacob Zuma man, to become the first woman president of Business SA.

There are many problems on the labour front that need his attention.

He must choose between his two jobs because he clearly cannot douse all the fires in both.
