A POLICE officer has been charged with murder after allegedly killing a man who attacked him in Musina on Saturday.

A POLICE officer has been charged with murder after allegedly killing a man who attacked him in Musina on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Mohale Ramatseba said the deceased was part of a group of men who allegedly attacked the officer, stabbing him with broken beer bottles.

"The police officer was following up information about the smuggling of goods at a motel in Musina on Saturday morning when five Ethiopian men attacked him," Ramatseba said.

"He retaliated by firing shots at the suspects. One was killed instantly and two sustained wounds."

The two wounded men were under police guard in hospital, while two of their alleged accomplices were in police cells.

The Independent Complaints Directorate was investigating a case of murder against the officer, who was also in hospital.

In a separate incident a 40-year-old man was arrested for murder after he allegedly stabbed another man with a sharp object at Regorogile village in Thabazimbi.

"It is alleged the two fought over a woman when the incident happened. The victim died on arrival at the hospital," Ramatseba said.

The arrested man was expected to appear in the Thabazimbi magistrate's court today. - Sapa
